JOB DESCRIPTION:
This position involves organizing and executing a therapy program to support students with speech, language, and hearing impairments, while adhering to educational laws and policies.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Planning:
- Designing an exceptional student education (ESE) program aligned with the district’s educational philosophy.
- Engaging in continuous professional development through educational meetings, facility visits, professional literature, and collaboration with district staff.
- Coordinating with other ESE teachers for program planning and development.
2. Programming:
- Developing individualized educational plans annually for each student based on specific needs as per district guidelines.
- Conducting annual hearing screenings for specified grades according to District Procedures for Exceptional Student Education.
- Creating therapy plans tailored for each student.
- Scheduling appropriate sessions for exceptional students, involving relevant school personnel.
- Conducting annual speech and language screenings for all kindergarten students and new school enrollees.
- Leveraging community resources and agencies to meet the needs of exceptional students.
- Participating in in-school staffing and screening processes.
- Joining evaluation teams for students with speech, language, and hearing impairments.
- Screening all ESE candidates for hearing loss.
- Administering speech and/or hearing screening tests for students referred by the in-school staffing committee.
- Providing diagnostic/evaluation testing for students who fail speech screenings.
3. Public Relations:
- Collaborating with school personnel to coordinate ESE services within the school.
- Developing and conducting in-service programs to inform classroom teachers about the ESE program's goals and objectives.
- Consulting with classroom teachers about students' educational needs upon request.
- Offering instructional ideas to teachers for exceptional students in the classroom.
- Providing information to community groups and parents about ESE programs as needed.
- Coordinating and providing news releases through the immediate supervisor for local news media as required.
4. Reporting:
- Ensuring each student in the program has necessary evaluation records in their permanent folder.
- Providing the principal with up-to-date schedules of exceptional students.
- Completing and submitting progress reports for each student in the program.
- Supplying progress reports to school personnel and parents as needed.
- Preparing appropriate reports for local, state, federal, and educational agencies.
- Referring students needing further evaluation or services to the appropriate school personnel or community agencies.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Master’s degree.
- Valid California certification in the relevant field.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Certificate of Clinical Competence (ASHA).
- Experience in public schools.
