If you ever wondered where the term Oklahoma “Sooner” came from, you’ll soon find out when you take an SLP job in Oklahoma. In 1889, the state was opened to settlers in what was then known as a “Land Rush.” Prospective settlers who prematurely grabbed the stakes marking the plots (before the actual start time) were perhaps too kindly nicknamed “Sooners” and the name stuck. The term became more entrenched as the University of Oklahoma has adopted the name “Sooners” for its sports teams’ mascot.
Originally settled by Native Americans, Oklahoma has the largest Native American population to this day – with 250,000 American Indians residing here and 39 tribal headquarters still active. Oklahoma has more man-made lakes than any other state, with more than one million acres of water. As an interesting side-note, the state has the “Lowest Cost of Living” rate for 2008 according to Missourieconomy.org. When you take a SLP job in Oklahoma, you’ll be able to enjoy the best of both worlds – beautiful landscapes and a great cost of living.
